Thu, 25 Sep 2025 12:00:00 +0200
Welcome to a UTRI Transformation Talk with visiting scholar Dr James Painter, Oxford University, UK who will explore the complexity of climate science communication and the role of mainstream media in reporting on Antarctic ice sheet melts.

Understanding Antarctic ice sheet melt involves deep uncertainty —a term used by the IPCC to describe scientific challenges in projecting the timing and scale of future sea level rise. This uncertainty makes it difficult for scientists to produce precise forecasts and for policymakers to plan effective responses to different scenarios.

In this talk James Painter, senior lecturer at the University of Oxford, former BBC-journalist and IPCC expert, will present early findings from a research project examining how mainstream media report on Antarctic ice melt. He will highlight how scientific findings are framed, what gaps exists in the coverage, and which narratives dominate in a context of deep uncertainty for the sea level rise in the Antarctic area.

This seminar welcomes researchers, students and anyone interested in climate, media and communication studies and science communication.

Participation on-site or digital

For those attending on-site, a free light vegetarian lunch will be served. We welcome everyone interested in engaging in research and collaboration for sustainable transformation as we gather this year around the theme of polycrises.

Our world is characterised by global challenges of increasing complexity. The combination of crises such as pandemics, climate change, and wars reinforce each other and together form a polycrisis. To address these challenges, interdisciplinary research is required at multiple levels. At this conference, experts from various disciplines will gather to discuss and shed light on the phenomenon of polycrisis from different perspectives.

Take the opportunity to meet researchers and colleagues from across the university, and develop new collaborations that can help address major societal challenges of our time.

Read more: Dealing with the polycrisis - UTRI conference 2025

Polykris - bild
VardagsrummetConference/en/events/dealing-with-the-polycrisis_12068499/2025-11-27T08:00:00+01:002025-11-27T16:30:00+01:00/en/events/rayyan-at-lunch22_12126162/Rayyan at lunchLearn to use the Rayyan platform in this 30-minute session, particularly in the context of systematic reviews.Thu, 27 Nov 2025 12:15:00 +0100
Learn to use the Rayyan platform in this 30-minute session, particularly in the context of systematic reviews.

Content

Walkthrough of Rayyan.

General usage.

User interface.

Who can participate?

Employees and students at Umeå University.
