Conference grants 2025
Deadline: continuous throughout the year
Are you planning a conference that will be held in Umeå? Then you can apply for funding for it! Umeå municipality, Region Västerbotten and Umeå University annually sets aside funding for conferences.
The grant amount is based on the estimated number of attendees, with a maximum total of SEK 60,000.
National conferences – SEK 200 per person
Nordic conferences – SEK 225 per person
International conferences – SEK 275 per person

Are you looking to carry out activities that promote research about sustainable transformation? Apply for funding up to SEK 80,000, and receive both financial support and practical assistance. Activities can for example be seminars, symposia, workshops, panel discussions, conferences, writing retreats, pilot projects, or time for writing research proposals.

NordForsk+FORMAS: Sustainable Futures of Forests
Deadline: 27 May
With support from FORMAS, NordForsk launches a joint Nordic-Baltic call for proposals on sustainable futures of forest. The intention is to provide funding for 7 projects under this call. Available call budget: NOK 80 million. The consortium must include research-performing organisations from at least four different countries of which two must be Nordic countries.
NordForsk: Antagonistic threats challenging societal security in the Nordic and Baltic countries

NordForsk announces funding for approximately seven Nordic and Nordic-Baltic research projects. The aim is to fund research projects in the societal security field that will contribute to increased knowledge about antagonistic threats and societal security in the Nordic-Baltic region. Maximum amount of Nordic funding that may be sought is up to NOK 12,3 million.
Funding support from INTERACT Association for Access

As an early career researcher, you can receive up to 15 000 EUR from INTERACT Association for conducting your terrestrial research in the Arctic, Boreal and Alpine regions.
Early-Career Researchers are defines as "undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate level up to 5 years active in science after the latest degree".
Nordforsk: Nordic research networks within natural science and related engineering fields

NordForsk hereby announces funding for up to 15 research networks. The available budget is op to NOK 30 million. Apply for up to NOK 2 million.
Nordforsk: Indigenous guidelines for NordForsk
Deadline: 14 August 2025
NordForsk announces funding for a project that will produce a report to support the formulation of the Nordic guidelines for research involving Indigenous people. Apply for up to NOK 0.5 million.
SSF: Cyber resilience for AI systems

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) invests SEK 60 million in cyber resilience for AI systems, with the aim to create a research centre to make future AI systems more resilient to cyberattacks and technical failures. The goal is to develop robust, secure AI solutions that enhance Sweden’s digital independence. The application must include collaboration between leading researchers in both AI and cybersecurity, and participation from industry or societal actors. Researchers in the humanities, social sciences, and behavioural sciences are also encouraged to be involved to ensure sustainable implementation.

The Industrial Doctoral School for Research and Innovation (IDS) announces funding for a doctoral student in collaborative projects. As a researcher at Umeå University, qualified to act as principal supervisor to a doctoral student, you can apply for doctoral resources together with an external organisation as co-applicant. IDS funds 50 percent of the doctoral student’s salary for 48 months.

Future Forests: seed money for interdisciplinary forest research, spring 2025

Future Forests is launching a seed money call for subjects related to forest sciences and sustainable forestry development. Researchers at SLU, Skogforsk and Umeå University can apply for up to SEK 100,000 for short-term projects or pilot studies that can form the basis for larger interdisciplinary projects.

SSF Future Research Leaders

Every third year
Are you a young researcher aspiring to lead pioneering research in natural sciences, technology, or medicine? Seize the opportunity to join the SSF flagship programme, Future Research Leaders. 16 researchers will receive SEK 15 million each, alongside comprehensive leadership training over five years. To be eligible, you must have completed your doctoral degree between 2018 and 2020, and work full-time at a Swedish university or research institute during the grant period.
