A new definition of statistical power for functional data

Abstract: Statistical power analysis is fundamental for sample size estimation. Unlike classical scalar data, statistical power for functional data has multiple different definitions. The primary aim of this study is to propose Functional Power, a new definition of statistical power intended for a priori sample size estimation. Following this, this paper explores the distinctions among existing definitions and the rationale for selecting one over another, as these choices are not well established in the literature. We demonstrate that different definitions correspond to distinct inferential objectives, leading to varying estimated values of power and, consequently, different sample size requirements. This paper highlights that selecting a definition solely because it offers the minimum sample size is misguided. A comprehensive simulation study was conducted, and the results show that Functional Power is the only definition that ensures adequate rejection of the null hypothesis across most regions where differences are expected to occur. Furthermore, the findings indicate that more precise prior knowledge about the domain, where differences are expected, can reduce the required sample size when Functional Power is used as the definition of statistical power.
