Doctoral studies

At the department, doctoral studies are carried out within two different areas, Educational Work and Subject Matter Education. Within the two areas you can specialize in both science education and mathematics education.

Are you interested in exploring questions related to schools, education, teaching, and learning, with a particular focus on mathematics, science, or technology/engineering? Pursuing a doctoral education with us will deepen your knowledge in these areas and develop your capacity for critical and analytical thinking.

Facts about Doctoral Education
Doctoral studies comprise four years of full‑time study for a doctoral degree and two years for a licentiate degree.

The programme includes a number of doctoral courses (75–105 ECTS) and a dissertation project (135–165 ECTS).

In the event of parental leave and/or care of children, the study period is extended.

Doctoral students receive a salary according to union agreements during their employment and therefore do not need to take student loans.

A doctoral programme is a university education comprising four years of full‑time study leading to a doctoral degree. To be admitted, you must already hold a university degree at the undergraduate or master’s level, for example a teacher education degree. The exact admission requirements are specified in the general syllabus for each doctoral subject. Our subjects are Educational Work (Pedagogisk arbete) and Subject Matter Education (Ämnesdidaktik), with specialisations in mathematics, science, or technology/engineering (see links to the syllabi below).

The programme consists of coursework and a dissertation component, and as a doctoral student you receive support from at least two supervisors. You will typically be affiliated with one of the university’s graduate schools, where you take courses and meet other doctoral students in the field of educational sciences. In this way, we build a stronger doctoral education in collaboration with departments across other faculties.

NMD offers an open and collegial research environment, making it easy to receive support from fellow doctoral students and researchers in both formal and informal settings. The department has strong relationships with municipalities across the country, and its researchers and doctoral students are sought‑after partners in school development and professional development initiatives.

After completing the programme, you earn a doctoral degree in your subject and may, for example, work with research and teaching at the university level, including within teacher education.
