About the course

In this course the insight regarding conditions and consequences for production of products deepens. This happens through reasoning around sustainability in different ways when it comes to production aspects, such as environmental-, economical- and social sustainability. Through reflection, the student will deepen her/his understanding of the design area's possibilities and limitations from a production and sustainability perspective. The course also includes a section in which new technologies, new production methods and materials are tested and discussed.   - Production and sustainability, 3 credits - New techniques, 3 credits

1. Production and sustainability, 3 credits The course gives an orientation in material- and production knowledge. The student will be able to suggest different ways of industrial manufacturing of a product. Students will get an idea of the economic conditions that are associated with different manufacturing methods. The course also focuses on which environmental impacts product development and production can have, and tools available for assessing environmental impact when developing products. Concepts such as life cycle analyses and environmental management systems are introduced. The student exercises her/his ability to analyze and assess various environmental factors, resource use and material substitution, to analyse environmental driven innovations and use sustainability as a creative tool. The course includes teaching in material knowledge, assembly methods, sheet metal processing, surface treatment methods, molding and forging methods, extruded aluminum, chip cutting methods, modern machines and process preparation, as well as various aspects of polymer technology.

2. New techniques, 3 credits This part of the course is about innovative technologies, materials and production methods in a contemporary perspective.
