The Master's programme gives you broad knowledge in Biomedical Engineering. The profiles within the programme relate to our fields of expertise: Medical imaging, Signal processing and Biomechanics. Our courses are taught at the University Hospital in Umeå by committed researchers who are internationally active within the field of Biomedical Engineering, as well as by hospital engineers and physicians.

The studies comprise 4 semesters

The studies in the Master's Programme in Biomedical Engineering comprise a total of 4 semesters, including an independent degree project within the main subject of the programme.

The first semester is compulsory and provides knowledge in anatomy and physiology in parallel with courses within the main subject. The core courses include sensing, safety, prototyping, and processing and analysis of physiological signals and medical images.

The following two semesters offer a large range of elective courses. The final semester includes a master's thesis of 30 credits in the main field of Biomedical Engineering.

Theory with practical skills

During the programme, you will combine theory with practical skills. The lectures are given by skilled researchers and professionals (hospital engineers and physicians).

You will perform practical laboratory work situated in the hospital environment and take part in projects where you work with data from our ongoing research. You will discuss relevant topics in the form of seminars. You will also meet medical professionals during study visits at the hospital's different clinics.

2 years which corresponds to courses of 120 ECTS

The studies in the Master's Programme in Biomedical Engineering comprise a total of 4 semesters (2 years), which corresponds to courses of a total 120 ECTS. A core of 45 ECTS compulsory courses and a compulsory independent degree project of 30 ECTS in Biomedical Engineering are included. You need to take at least 15 ECTS elective courses, but you have a wide range of courses to choose from. Optional courses (no more than 22,5 ECTS) can be approved to be part of the programme.

Semester 1

All courses in the programme's first semester are compulsory. 

Semester 2

All courses in the programme's second semester are elective and/or optional. This flexibility enables you to study your second semester at another university. You have the opportunity to apply for Erasmus grants from Umeå University if you are interested in such exchange studies. We have a strong partnership with the master’s programme in at Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma. Examples of courses that you could include in your master’s degree are Automatic Control (6 ECTS), Bionic Systems and Neuroengineering (6 ECTS), and Biorobotics (6 ECTS).

Semester 3

Two courses in the programme's third semester are compulsory. The rest of the semester, you can take elective or optional courses. Examples of current elective courses are given below.

With a core competence in Biomedical Engineering and the practical skills that the programme will give, you will have great opportunities in various areas in the future.

You will be able to lead projects and to solve a broad range of problems such as analysing medical data and medical images to better understand diseases and physiological principles, or rehabilitation effects. You will be able to construct systems adhering to requirements such as sustainability and patient security.

You will be able to work in multidisciplinary project teams and critically address medical questions from an in-depth engineering perspective.
