Alasdair Milne, University of Glasgow
Drawing on doctoral work undertaken with the Creative AI Lab, part of the Arts Technologies department at Serpentine in London, in partnership with King’s College London, Dr Milne will discuss machine learning as a technology – as well as the hybrid sociotechnical systems artists build through machine learning art practice – to develop new understandings of what collaboration is. Dr Milne has been working with curator Sarah Cook on the AI and the Paradox of Agency exhibition on view at Bildmuseet and his research reflects on what we can learn from artists engaged in practices with AI and machine learning at their core.
Alongside consideration of the art on view at Bildmuseet, case studies of Delta_Ark’s Binah, 0rphan Drift and Etic Lab’s ISCRI, dmstfctn’s GOD MODE, and Holly Herndon and Matt Dryhurst’s The Call, each show how artists are system builders. This research shows how works of art can be understood to be demonstrating reinforcement learning in worldbuilding, explainability in machine learning, and challenging the complex stack required to sustain collaboration within proprietary technical infrastructures.
