Abstract
Trees can grow in environments with contrasting temperatures, photoperiods, soil conditions, precipitation regimes, etc., sometimes within the same species along a wide distribution range. Tree physiologists, geneticists, and breeders can use this pool of genetic diversity and phenotypic plasticity to decipher local adaptation mechanisms, stress responses, and possible genetic gains for traits of interest. In this talk I will present my past work with Nothofagus species from the Patagonian forest, dealing with conservation and climate change adaptation, and my current work with Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies in the context of the Swedish tree breeding programmes.
