The structure can be anything from a natural language sentence to a graph representing a fluid network. It can also be a DNA sequence, or a parse tree itself. For some reason, we might want to learn the least costly structure that can be generated from a certain rule set: the most likely sentence, or the smallest DNA sequence that fulfills the properties enforced by the rules. In that case, we can apply the algorithm Betty that finds the N 'best' (smallest, most likely, least costly, etc.) structures, disregarding any duplicates.

If you think that this in any way can help your research, please reach out, and we can discuss what adjustments to the implementation you might need to make it suit your purpose.

Interested in: Missed application areas, collaborations

Pitch 2: Ehsan Estaji, Postdoc at Department of Plant Physiology

Graph-Theoretic Integration of Multi-Omics Data: Enabling Multi-Hop Reasoning in Bioinformatics

Biological research generates vast, heterogeneous datasets — genomics, proteomics, regulatory networks, phenotypes — yet these typically remain siloed in separate databases with incompatible schemas. In this pitch, I present a knowledge graph approach that unifies many major plant biology databases into a single queryable network. The key insight is graph-theoretic: by representing biological entities and their relationships as a typed, attributed graph, we enable multi-hop reasoning — traversing chains of relationships (e.g., gene → protein → interaction → pathway → phenotype) that would be invisible when querying any single source. I'll discuss schema unification at scale, using graph topology to surface non-obvious connections, and how large language models can serve as a natural language interface to make complex graph queries accessible to non-programmers.

Interested in: Collaborations with researchers working on network analysis, knowledge representation, or data integration in any domain. NMR works by taking advantage of the dipole properties of the nucleus and measuring the signal as the nucleus re-aligns itself with an external magnetic field. Solid-state NMR (SSNMR) is an extension of the NMR technique that can be performed on materials such as soil, proteins, drugs, soaps, oils, polymers, glasses, and anything that is rigid enough to act like a solid. One limitation to the NMR technique is the direct detection of paramagnetic nuclei (atoms that contain loose electrons). Direct detection of a paramagnetic nucleus cannot be done because the fast relaxation induced by the unpaired electrons causes the signal to decay faster than the NMR timescale (which operates in milliseconds). This work overcomes the paramagnetic and reporter nuclei problem in manganese oxides by taking advantage of the antiferromagnetic properties of manganese oxides.

For this work, a new, fast pulse sequence was created to capture antiferromagnetic areas in manganese oxides. Due to this fast pulse sequence, direct observation of the Mn-55 nucleus was accomplished. Results show that the polymorphs of MnO2 (13 different polymorphs) are distinct, allowing the different phases to be characterized via SSNMR. Other polyoxides (MnO, Mn2O3, Mn3O4) shows that manganese oxides with different oxidation states can also be captured. This work complements other analytical techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman, which are used for phase identification. Other areas of research that could benefit from this technique include materials that may not always be well characterized by XRD (amorphous phases), catalysts, batteries, and mineralogy.

About the seminar series

The Research Seminar Series in Archaeology and Environmental Archaeology presents and discusses current research in archaeology and environmental archaeology.
See more upcoming seminars in the series
HUM.H.119Seminar/en/events/anne-christine-mirich_12165256/2026-03-26T13:00:00+01:002026-03-26T15:00:00+01:00/en/events/welcome-to-kickstart-prototyping-263-_12165864/Welcome to KICKSTART: PROTOTYPING 26/3 Ready to turn your idea into reality or join a startup? Welcome!

Abstract

Algorithmic practices such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) are being increasingly spread into every sphere of life. Data-driven research is having a larger and larger impact on society, acting as a promising tool for solving complex societal problems in critical sectors. Simultaneously, great risks exist connected to AI implementation and usage, such as reinforcing unjust discriminatory patterns. This talk explores the relationship between extractive practices and influences in contemporary AI development and governance, as well as the potential consequences of it for Indigenous communities like the Sámi.

Speakers

Nellie Pierre is a MSE student in Interaction Technology and Design at Umeå University. She focuses her research on holistic perspectives, questioning what developing technology in ways that benefit humanity, the environment and society really means from different perspectives. Currently, she is writing her master’s thesis on the role of transparency and interpretability in AI-systems related to epistemic justice.

Tuva Falk holds an MSc in Interaction Technology and Design from Umeå University. Her work critically examines the intersection of technology, society, and ethics, with a specific focus on the limits of machine logic. Driven by a passion for responsible AI, she investigates how digitization impacts cultural practices and embodied knowledge. Looking ahead, her ambition is to pursue further research exploring how we can design technology that safeguards human wisdom and respects ethical boundaries.
Jupiter, GalaxenLecture/en/events/ai-as-an-extractive-practice_12165668/2026-03-27T12:15:00+01:002026-03-27T13:00:00+01:00/en/events/building-restoration-futures_12166299/Building “Restoration Futures”A seminar with Harry W Fische from SLU about Building “Restoration Futures”: From Ecological Repair to Creative Transformations . Fri, 27 Mar 2026 13:00:00 +0100
Restoration has become a key environmental agenda of the present era, exemplified by the UN’s current Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-30) and pursued through a host of policies worldwide. But what does it mean to “restore” a landscape? Existing paradigms of thought understand restoration as a process of ecological recovery, yet provide only limited guidance on the ends toward which restoration should be pursued. In this talk, I develop the notion of “restoration futures”, which frames restoration as a contested and value-driven process of building more sustainable and thriving landscapes. I highlight some existing research on why large-scale target-driven restoration often fails, and why more empowered local governance can enable success. I then present an emerging framework for studying restoration futures, followed by preliminary findings from a comparative analysis of restoration values and aspirations drawn from cases in 16 countries. A futures lens makes explicit diverse aspirations and value conflicts, with potential to support more creative and democratic decision-making on restoration goals: what we wish to recover from the past, what aspects of the past we may seek to undo, what we strive to keep from the present, and what we aspire to build for the time to come. Toward which futures should we restore?

Bio

Harry Fischer is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor (Docent) in the Department of Forest Ecology and Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. University of Glasgow, UK

Host: Oliver Billker, MIMS

Venue: Major Groove, NUS

About the lecture:

Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) are essential, and their function of synthesising mitochondrial proteins is universal. The core of almost all mitoribosomes is formed from a small number of long and self-folding rRNA molecules. In contrast, the mitoribosome of the apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii assembles from over 50 extremely short rRNA molecules. We use cryo-EM to discover the features that enable this unusual mitoribosome to perform its function. By doing so we revealed novel cell-biology and ribosome biology principles, and we used genetic manipulation and biochemical analysis to provided validation for the corresponding observations.

Some of the new features found seem to have co-evolved with apicomplexan traits such as the unusually shuffled mitochondrial genome of Toxoplasma, and the expanded families of mitochondrial RNA binding proteins and of ApiAP2 transcription factors in apicomplexan and related organisms.

The talk will discuss how those features are intersected with the mitoribosome and speculate on their functional links.

https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/infectionimmunity/staff/lilachsheiner/
Major Groove, Umeå University HospitalSeminar/en/events/dgss-seminar-lilach-sheiner_12162726/2026-03-27T14:00:00+01:002026-03-27T15:00:00+01:00/en/events/explore-opportunities-with-south-africa---sweden-university-forum_12166751/Explore Opportunities within the South Africa - Sweden University ForumDiscover research and collaboration opportunities within SASUF+. Welcome!

Abstract

Building on the risks of digital extractivism, this talk presents a case study on a traditional Sámi herding practice as a stepping stone for more responsible AI design. By attempting to translate herding strategies into formal logic via Social Practice Theory, we perform a failure analysis to identify where digitization fractures. The results demonstrate that while logic can coordinate the syntax of herding, by mapping roles and routines, it fails to capture the semantic depth of embodied skills and historical memory. We argue that these epistemic gaps constitute protective boundaries that define where the machine’s knowledge ends and sovereign human wisdom must begin.

Sirius, GalaxenLecture/en/events/fraiday-navigating-the-epistemic-limits-of-ai_12165694/2026-04-10T12:15:00+02:002026-04-10T13:00:00+02:00/en/events/microbial-diversity-and-function-in-wetlands-and-macrophytes_12162769/Microbial diversity and function in wetlands and macrophytesHow microbial communities shapes ecosystem functioning in different wetlands and coastal environments. A Longitudinal Study of Swedish Workers

While unemployment is a common adverse life event with well-established negative health effects, little is known about whether these consequences vary between standard and non-standard employees. Differences in institutional support and financial resources may buffer or exacerbate effects of unemployment, yet empirical evidence on this is limited. This study examines whether the mental health consequences of unemployment vary by previous employment conditions.

Using the register-based Swedish Work, Illness, and Labour Market Participation cohort, which includes all individuals aged 16–64 residing in Sweden in 2005, we compared the risk of first diagnosis of common mental disorders (CMD) or first prescription of psychiatric medication between unemployed and employed individuals. We tested the association between unemployment and mental health using Cox proportional hazards regression to estimate adjusted hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals. Two-way interactions between unemployment and employment conditions (standard, substandard, precarious) were added to the models. Results show that both unemployment and exposure to substandard or precarious employment independently increase CMD risk.

We found weak or no evidence of multiplicative interaction between unemployment and previous employment type, but modest positive additive interaction was observed. This indicates that the relative risk increase associated with unemployment is similar for standard and non-standard employees (lack of multiplicative interaction), yet the absolute extra burden—measured by new CMD cases attributable to unemployment—is greater among those previously in precarious employment (positive additive interaction). These findings suggest that while unemployment affects all workers' mental health similarly in relative terms, non-standard employees face a disproportionate absolute burden.

All interested are welcome to participate in CEDAR seminars. Recent advances in passive acoustic monitoring and sound analysis offer a promising non-invasive approach for detecting and quantifying biological processes belowground. In this seminar, I will explore the potential of acoustic monitoring to investigate processes hidden beneath our feet. I will highlight how passive acoustic monitoring and accessible analytical tools may advance our ability to study important belowground ecological processes.

Drop in to IceLab (MazeMap link) or join via Zoom: IceLab Living Room Zoom 612 568 7586 https://umu.zoom.us/my/icelabcouch

About IceLab Friday Spark Seminars

Every Friday between lunch time and fika there will be informal internal talks or open seminars in 2026. At this septum, critical molecular events are coordinated to ensure septal stability, compartmentalisation and efficient spore development. In previous work we showed that coordination between chromosome translocation into the forespore and septal peptidoglycan remodelling is required to maintain transcriptional compartmentalisation at the septal pore through which the chromosome is translocated. This coordination is achieved through a mechanism controlled by the EMP complex (composed of SpoIIIE, SpoIIIM and PbpG) that localises at the septal pore. In this study, we identify CprV as an additional factor that functions with the EMP complex in maintaining septal pore stability and compartmentalisation. Consistent with this idea, sporulating cells lacking CprV exhibit miscompartmentalisation and chromosome translocation defects in a fraction of cells, but removal of CprV in cells lacking SpoIIIM or PbpG, significantly exacerbates these defects. Furthermore, and highlighting CprV’s safeguarding function, CprV localisation at the septal pore depends on SpoIIIE and increases in frequency when chromosome translocation or peptidoglycan remodelling around the septal pore is compromised. Overall, our data support a model whereby CprV safeguards the septal pore, ensuring tight coordination between chromosome translocation and peptidoglycan remodelling during sporulation, in the face of architectural changes to septal pore structure.

https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/sci/lifesci/people/crodrigues/
Major Groove, Umeå University HospitalSeminar/en/events/dgss-seminar-chris-rodrigues_12162731/2026-04-17T14:00:00+02:002026-04-17T15:00:00+02:00/en/events/fika-efter-en-forskare5_12145098/Fika efter en forskareWe’re excited to introduce Science Bites, the English edition of Fika efter en forskare! The transition from adolescence to adulthood, academic demands, and a high training load together create considerable stress. As a result, young elite female athletes are at increased risk of nutrient deficiencies, disordered eating, recurrent or prolonged respiratory infections, reduced bone density, and mental health problems, among other concerns.

The ongoing research project is a six-year prospective study in which we monitor training load, performance development, physical and mental health, diet and nutrition, and hormonal and metabolic factors in young female XCS and BiA athletes, starting from their entry into upper‑secondary elite sports schools. Wed, 22 Apr 2026 14:00:00 +0200
Successful Academic Publishing through Pedagogical Communication

Communicating research in both writing and speech is a pedagogical process in which we as researchers need to adapt to our audience. Communicating about one’s research can be challenging when navigating the different stages of the publication process. At these stages, we need to understand and respond to both the editor’s requirements and, often, reviewers’ comments.

This workshop addresses pedagogical communication in the publication process with the aim of improving the publication rate of important research results. The workshop begins with an introduction to the topic, followed by practical exercises where participants will discuss each other’s examples. We will work with both technical aspects such as what a cover letter should include and what language and structure are most effective for point by point responses to reviewers’ comments. We will also address psychological reframing, focusing on how to genuinely listen to an engaged reviewer and how to prevent our own ego from getting in the way of success.

Before the workshop, participants are asked to bring a cover letter written by themselves or by someone in their research group. Please anonymize the text if necessary so that it can be discussed during the workshop.

Language: Swedish, but the workshop can be given in English if needed.

Register
Läraren, UPLWorkshop/en/events/successful-academic-publishing_12165617/2026-04-22T14:00:00+02:002026-04-22T16:00:00+02:00/en/events/arctic-connect-apr2026_12157170/Arctic Connect apr2026Strengthen your Arctic connections at Arctic Connect! This poses as both a cultural heritage challenge and an interesting AI research problem.

Nikiforos will demonstrate a multimodal approach which combines CLIP and Zero-Shot model classification to predict estimated photograph locations. The results are inconsistent but also revealing: when conditions align, the system achieves remarkable accuracy (essentially finding the exact same location photographed 100 years apart). But the approach also fails unpredictably, exposing bottlenecks in historical image geolocation.

Through detailed case studies of both successes and failures, Nikiforos will explore what works, what doesn't, and why. Beyond technical challenges, the project also raises important questions about applying AI to indigenous cultural materials ethically and respectfully.
Sirius, GalaxenLecture/en/events/fraiday-geolocating-arctic-archive-photos-with-ai_12163609/2026-04-24T12:15:00+02:002026-04-24T13:00:00+02:00/en/events/peter-gottfridsson---medical-science_12164713/Peter Gottfridsson - Medical SciencePeter Gottfridsson is defending his doctoral thesis in Medical Science with a focus on Anaesthesiology.Fri, 24 Apr 2026 13:00:00 +0200
Peter Gottfridsson is defending his doctoral thesis with the title: Heart strain during different loading conditions, in health and cardiac illness.

External reviewer: Docent Jonatan Oras, Department of Clinical Sciences, University of Gothenburg

Principal Supervisor: Michael Haney

For participation on Zoom:

Meeting-ID: 619 2457 8475
Passcode: 181590
1D T9 Hörsal B, NUSDefence of doctoral thesis/en/events/peter-gottfridsson---medical-science_12164713/2026-04-24T13:00:00+02:002026-04-24T16:00:00+02:00/en/events/seminar-camilla-andersson_12160209/Seminar: Camilla AnderssonWho cares about those who care? Despite this, restoration actions are often directed towards individual measures, ignoring trade-offs and synergies that may affect multiple ecosystem processes and services. Due to the bathymetry of the Baltic Sea, sub-basins may be differently impacted by pressures, making it challenging to observe common patterns and co-occurring processes.

Here, we provide the first comprehensive analysis of systemic spatiotemporal changes of food webs across Baltic Sea sub-basins. Our analyses cover 26 to 46 years of harmonised data collection and apply integrated trend analysis. We compare temporal trends of key structural food web components, focusing on relative changes between trophic guilds, and interpret these changes in relation to variations in key environmental factors and human pressures. We found shifts in trophic-guild balance and ecosystem reorganization in all sub-basins, which were associated with regional changes in anthropogenic pressures.
Umeå Marine Sciences Centre, NorrbynSeminar/en/events/systemic-food-web-reorganisation-due-to-multiple-pressures-_12164736/2026-04-27T14:00:00+02:002026-04-27T15:30:00+02:00/en/events/the-gender-seminar_12155175/The Gender SeminarVulnerable writing as a feminist methodological practiceTue, 28 Apr 2026 13:15:00 +0200
Vulnerable writing as a feminist methodological practice

A seminar with Tiffany Page, University Collage London

(In English)
UCGS librarySeminar/en/events/the-gender-seminar_12155175/2026-04-28T13:15:00+02:002026-04-28T15:00:00+02:00/en/events/zoe-falomir_12151451/Umeå Cognitive Science Seminar: Zoe FalomirThe Umeå Cognitive Science Seminar invites you to a seminar with Zoe Falomir, Umeå University.Tue, 28 Apr 2026 15:15:00 +0200
The Umeå Cognitive Science Seminar invites you to a a seminar with Zoe Falomir, Associate professor at the Department of Computing Science. When school, hobbies or public free time activities are far away, depending on area, behind of 10, 20 or even 100 kilometres, young people on those rural areas lack the equal services.
Mobile youth work, youth workers on wheels can be one option for the future youth work sector. Going around by cars on the fields of young people’s free time places create new approaches in youth work. Mobile youth work as working method can be labelled under the concept “detached youth work”, that mean doing the work with young people in those various public and semi-public environments where youth hang out. In this type of work the encountering plays important role and the encounters should see as a characteristic method itself.
The seminar lecture deals both, the detached youth work, the special type of youth work and its features done in Finland and the theme of periphery / rural youth. Lecture is based on the Mobile Youth Work in Finland Research Project (2021-2022) that was financed by the education and cultural ministry of Finland and carried out in co-operation between Humak University of Applied Science and Finnish Youth Research Society.

Aino Tormulainen, Ph.D., Senior Lecturer and part-time project worker in Humak University of Applied Science.
Aino Tormulainen works as a Senior lecturer in Community Ecucator program in Humak University of Applied Science, where community educators are educated. Among the more common varieties are thermoluminescence (TL), mainly applied to pottery and other fired materials; optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), more often applied to sediment; and luminescence profiling (POSL), a relative dating tool. Apart from some older TL dating, luminescence has not been used very much in Swedish archaeological contexts. However, at the Lund Luminescence Laboratory (LLL) we have during the last few years worked together with archaeologists to explore applications of luminescence in different settings and the number of archaeological luminescence ages is increasing.

In this talk, I’ll give a brief overview of how the method works and then move on to a series of archaeological case studies, based on research at the LLL. The dated settings include, for example, road tracks, cairns, floors, ovens and hearths, wall remains and sand-covered cultural layers with a time span from the Neolithic to Medieval and historic times. The aim is to show what the technique can and cannot do in practice, and to offer a sense of what luminescence can contribute to research questions about, for example, construction histories, site use, and broader landscape development.

About the seminar series

The Research Seminar Series in Archaeology and Environmental Archaeology presents and discusses current research in archaeology and environmental archaeology.
See more upcoming seminars in the series
HUM.H.119Seminar/en/events/helena-alexanderson_12165296/2026-05-21T13:00:00+02:002026-05-21T15:00:00+02:00/en/events/avatars-and-conversational-ai--opportunity-discovery-workshop_12166848/Avatars and Conversational AI – Opportunity discovery workshopWorkshop on avatar and conversational AIThu, 21 May 2026 13:00:00 +0200
Humlab together with WARA Media & Language, part of the WASP research program, welcomes researchers, instructors, and graduate students at Umeå University to explore research opportunities around avatars and conversational AI. While jawed vertebrates generate adaptive immune diversity through RAG-mediated V(D)J recombination, invertebrates lack classical adaptive immunity yet exhibit unexpectedly sophisticated mechanisms for immune specificity. This seminar draws on evidence from sea urchin models to explore alternative evolutionary and functional pathways to immune diversification.

Sea urchins possess a unique immune effector arm based on the Transformer (Trf) gene family, which generates exceptional molecular diversity and mediates pathogen-specific immune responses. Trf genes encode intrinsically disordered proteins with extensive variation in sequence, structure, and expression, enabling highly tailored immune responses despite the absence of canonical adaptive immunity. Although structurally distinct from vertebrate antibodies, Trf-mediated immunity shares key conceptual parallels with adaptive immune systems, including diversification mechanisms, restricted cellular expression, and functional specificity. Remarkedly, single-cell analyses reveal that individual coelomocytes express a single Trf transcript and undergo somatic gene diversification through deletions, duplications, and point mutations, generating cell-specific immune repertoires within a single organism.

Although the molecular drivers of the Trf combinatorial immune strategy remain unresolved, we have identified recombination activating gene-like (RAGL) homologues in sea urchins that may function as nucleases and potentially contribute to somatic immune gene diversification. Together, these findings position sea urchins as a powerful model for understanding how immune specificity and diversity can emerge independently of vertebrate adaptive immunity.

https://campuscore.ariel.ac.il/wp/molecular_ecology/
Major Groove, Umeå University HospitalSeminar/en/events/ssibs-seminar-matan-oren_12162768/2026-06-12T14:00:00+02:002026-06-12T15:00:00+02:00/en/events/arctic-security-forum_12166931/Arctic Security ForumArctic Security Forum in Oulu gathers key actors to address pressing Arctic security challenges and foster new collaborations.Tue, 16 Jun 2026 00:00:00 +0200
Arctic Security Forum 2026 brings together leading experts, policymakers, industry representatives and researchers to address some of the most pressing security challenges in the Arctic today. Well-designed parental leave policies can support greater father involvement, yet the pace of change toward shared caregiving differs considerably both between and within countries.

Workplace contexts can constrain or incentivise leave-taking through normative pressures, organisational policies, and concerns over job security or career development. Our study examines reciprocal influences: not only how workplace contexts shape fathers' choices, but also how fathers' leave-taking behaviour may reshape workplace norms. For example, when high-skilled fathers leverage their bargaining power to take leave, their actions may normalise such behaviour among peers, potentially triggering broader organisational change. The aim is to identify local tipping points where shifts in group behaviour and norms occur.

And some notes from Satu about the plan for the talk:
I begin the presentation with a brief introduction to selected Markovian models. I then present first results from our study, which applies a feedback-augmented non-homogeneous hidden Markov model to Finnish full-population administrative register data with employer–employee linkages. This approach allows us to quantify how previous fathers' leave choices reshape workplace contexts, thereby influencing subsequent fathers' decisions. In doing so, we map a dynamic, two-way process of adaptation between fathers and their workplaces.

All interested are welcome to participate in CEDAR seminars.
