NEWS Anders Johansson, Professor of Infectious Diseases and Senior Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Infection Control at ͯÑÕÊÓƵ, has been appointed Head of Department with the role of State Epidemiologist at the Public Health Agency of Sweden.
Anders Johansson is a Professor of Infectious Diseases and Senior Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Infection Control at Umeå University. He has now been appointed Head of Department with the role of State Epidemiologist at the Public Health Agency of Sweden.

Anders Johansson is a highly regarded researcher who became professor in 2023 at the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Umeå University. He has participated in popular science events on topics such as antibiotic resistance and COVID-19 and was a frequently consulted spokesperson on pandemic-related issues, both within the university and in the media.
In its press release, the Public Health Agency of Sweden states that several highly qualified candidates applied for the position and that Anders Johansson was selected following an overall assessment:
“Among other areas, Anders Johansson has worked on antibiotic resistance, vaccine protection and biological preparedness. He has also served as an expert for several key authorities and held leadership roles in crisis management at both regional and national levels,” the press release states. It also includes a statement from Director-General Olivia Wigzell:
“We are pleased to announce that Anders Johansson will take up the position. He has excellent leadership skills and many years of experience as an associate professor and subsequently professor of infectious diseases, as well as a specialist in both infectious diseases and infection control. In his role as Head of Department and State Epidemiologist, Anders Johansson will lead and develop the agency’s communicable disease control work and promote continued collaboration with universities and regional authorities,” says Director-General Olivia Wigzell.
Anders Johansson will take up his position as Head of the Department for Communicable Disease Control and Preparedness, with the role of State Epidemiologist, on 1 October.
