Flatness of weavings from structural stability of tensegrities (and back)
Speaker: Louis Theran, University of St Andrews
Abstract: The most classical topic in rigidity theory is the structural stability of scaffold-like structures called “frameworks” and “tensegrities", which has its roots in the 19th century work on Maxwell, Airy and others. More recently, the stability of structures made by weaving together elastic beams has started to get attention in the structural mechanics community. I will describe how these “weavings” relate to tensegrities via classical polar duality, building on work of Tarnai and Whiteley in the 1980’s.
This talk is based on joint work with C Millar (SOM) and B Schulze (Lancaster). No rigidity background is required.
