Samspel mellan ord och symboler i matematikundervisning med fokus på lärande av likhet
Research project
The purpose of the project is to clarify how teachers’ work with planning, implementing, and following up on mathematics lesson
The purpose of the project is to clarify how teachers’ work with planning, implementing, and following up on mathematics lessons, with a focus on the interaction between natural language and mathematical symbols, can support students’ learning of mathematical concepts.
Central to mathematics is the use of various resources for communication, such as language, symbols, and images, regardless of theoretical perspective. However, students have difficulty managing the interaction between different resources for communication, and it is unclear how this interaction can be designed to support students’ learning of mathematical concepts. This project focuses on two resources for communication, mathematical symbols and natural language, which directly connect to a prioritized area in mathematics from Örnsköldsvik Municipality.
The purpose of the project is to clarify how teachers’ work with planning, implementing, and following up on mathematics lessons, with a focus on the interaction between natural language and mathematical symbols, can support students’ learning of mathematical concepts.
The project is limited to studying the concept of equality, which is fundamental in all mathematical areas and problematic for students at several school levels. The meaning of the equal sign is also a mathematical content that is highlighted as a prioritized area by Örnsköldsvik Municipality.
The project's goal is to further develop a tool that teachers can use to support the design and implementation of mathematics education, focusing on the interaction between different resources for communication. The project is based on the first version of the tool, then limited to subtraction in primary school, developed in a previous project together with Örnsköldsvik Municipality, funded by the School Research Institute.
