UmArts initiatives at UID

Post industrial making group

Led by Ylva Fernaeus, Associate Professor at UID, the  brings together researchers investigating the intersection of traditional sloyd/craft and digital design, bridging high-tech and low-tech approaches to making.

Interdisciplinary postdoctoral fellowships

UmArts encourages new research perspectives through collaborative fellowships, including: 

• Natarsha Bates, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Design at UID, collaborates with Teresa Frisan’s Molecular Biology Lab in a project that develops new artworks based on fermentation and olfactory practices in Umeå.
• Young Suk Lee, Postdoctoral fellow at UID, as part of the WASP-HS Art and AI project, exploring the poetic potential of AI by reintroducing human values through a a combiniation of traditional craft, digital fabrication, and physical computing.

Artists and designers in residence

UmArts hosts visiting creatives at Umeå Institute of Design, such as:

• Cyanne Van den Houten, whose playful, design-driven practice explores the intersection of magic and technology through generative systems, AI-led performances, and co-creation with human and non-human actors.

Small visionary projects

These projects support experimental and forward-thinking design research, including:

• , led by Cindy Kohtala, Professor in Design for Sustainability at UID, with collaborators Rickard Åström, Sara Rypander, and Magnus Wonk
