Abstract (på engelska)

Palaeoenvironmental remains provide a unique archive of past landscapes, climate, vegetation, woodland management, agriculture and human activity. However, the quality and interpretative value of these remains depend on decisions made throughout the archaeological process—from initial excavation and sampling strategies through specialist analysis, reporting, integration, curation, and publication.

This presentation explores best practice in palaeoenvironmental archaeology, focusing on the journey from the recovery of environmental remains to the synthesis of results within wider archaeological interpretations. The talk will detail the Palaeo-environmental Sampling Guidelines in use in Ireland and how different types of palaeoenvironmental evidence are preserved, how appropriate sampling strategies and sample sizes are determined, and the importance of effective recovery, storage and processing methods.

The role of specialist analysis and reporting will be discussed, including the integration of palaeoenvironmental results into final excavation reports and broader research frameworks. The presentation will also consider the temporary curation of environmental remains, submission requirements to the National Museum of Ireland and the importance of publication in ensuring that palaeoenvironmental datasets contribute to long-term archaeological research.

Drawing on case studies from Irish archaeological excavations, the presentation will highlight the challenges and opportunities associated with recovering and interpreting environmental evidence. It will demonstrate how careful planning, collaboration between archaeologists and specialists and the integration of multiple environmental proxies can transform individual samples into meaningful reconstructions of past landscapes and human-environment interactions.
