Freedom, virtue, eternal life, knowledge, action—all these goods require the capacity to act or even to exist independent of external support. As commentators have often remarked, Spinoza therefore appears to bar human beings from the good life. And yet, helping us achieve such a life is the explicit goal of his philosophy.

This essay examines a less-discussed instance of the same type of problem and proposes a framework for addressing it. According to Spinoza’s conatus doctrine, human beings possess some capacity for sustaining their existence independent of external support. At the same time, Spinoza explicitly affirms, in line with a long philosophical tradition, that self-preservation is metaphysically impossible for beings like us, beings that by nature depend on other things in order to exist.

To address this issue, I argue that there are two ways of conceiving the dependence of modes on substance according to Spinoza. Just when modes are conceived as in some sense the same as the sustaining substance can they be self-preserving. Crucially, so conceived, modes are self-preserving because of way they depend on substance. Spinoza’s metaphysics thus opens up the possibility for a kind of existential independence that does not conflict with, but is on the contrary enabled by, one’s status as a dependent being.

All interested are welcome to this meeting.

About the seminar series

Learn more about the seminar series in Philosophy and upcoming events
HUM.H.119Seminar/en/events/josefine-klingspor_12137063/2025-12-17T13:15:00+01:002025-12-17T15:00:00+01:00/en/events/study-at-umea-university-webinar_12135300/Study at ±«³¾±ðÃ¥ University webinarAre you curious about studying in Sweden? KeenanQueer Play (And Its Haters) Wed, 17 Dec 2025 15:00:00 +0100

Queer Play (And Its Haters)

In this presentation, we begin by recounting the unexpected response to our work on drag pedagogy, including both its celebration and the political backlash. Drawing in part from our experiences with the publication of that article, we offer a work-in-progress manifesto proposing queer play as a strategic orientation—as well as set of imaginative, intellectual, and embodied tactics—toward enacting more just and joyful realities across a range of cultural and political contexts.

Queerness and play share many conceptual affinities, particularly in facilitating creative, non-normative, and otherwise outside-the-box approaches to ways of thinking and interacting. Following scholars in both queer (e.g., Rubin 1984, Cohen 1997, Muñoz 2009, Ahmed 2006) and play studies (e.g., Huizinga 1955, Caillois 1958, Flanagan 2009, Trammell 2023), we conceive of queer play in expansive ways. By “queer” we are less focused on LGBTQ+ people or topics, and instead emphasize queer ways of being, knowing, and relating. By “play,” we intentionally imagine a capacious range of activities, from traditional “games” to what game scholars Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman (2003) describe as activities of “being playful.”

Yet, many historic and contemporary sites of LGBTQ+ struggle and study distance themselves from overtly playful practices in favor of mainstream modes of respectability and policy. Still, queer play is already mischieviously present in many dominant and disciplining institutions—from schooling to social media platforms—in ways that people misuse (Ahmed 2019), obfuscate (Brunton and Nissenbaum 2016), or otherwise “[embrace] the powerful act of playing the ‘wrong’ way” (Ruberg 2019, 18).

Drawing on communication and education studies (including our own work on drag pedagogy and digital cultures: Kornstein 2019; Keenan and Hot Mess 2020), we offer a broad conceptualization of queer play as an alternative worldmaking strategy—for pedagogical practice, research, and political action. In so doing, we complicate several tensions in both queerness and play, including: discourses of childishness, utility and uselessness, as well as risk and danger; topics that are “off limits;” and the overemphasis on both games and on affects of joy. We share examples of figures (e.g., Taylor Mac, Tom of Finland, The Muppets), scenes/sites (e.g., play parties, dollhouses, imaginary museums), and potential tools/toys of queer play (e.g., queer slang, tarot cards, glitter) that demonstrate queer play already in action. We conclude by offering proposals (and demands) for what queer play might look and feel like, focusing on themes of relationality, aesthetics, and sensation.

Marta Padovan-Özdemir (chair and discussant)
Associate professor, Roskilde University, Denmark is one of the pioneering researchers of norm critique in Denmark. Sweden’s strong tradition of quantitative historical research, combined with its access to high-quality original historical records, has enabled departments to construct various excellent databases, including SEDD and the Historical Manufacturing Census of Sweden in Lund, POPLINK in Umeå, and GOPP in Gothenburg.

Yet, assembling such databases is highly labor-intensive, requiring large teams with expertise in handwriting and transcription, and generous external funding. New machine-learning tools are, however, cutting the costs associated with transcribing historical records. With only minor hand compiled training datasets, small teams can transcribe records and assemble large databases in months rather than years. In this presentation, we present the strategies used to construct a new population database, covering everybody living in Stockholm in 1955. We describe the machine-learning method, the original records, and the main challenges that we encounter and how we address them.

Fatmomakke floor 4 NBET / ZoomSeminar/en/events/constructing-a-population-database-using-automated-methods_12153476/2026-01-08T13:00:00+01:002026-01-08T14:00:00+01:00/en/events/anna-loden-subject-matter-education_12147580/Anna Lodén, Subject Matter EducationStudent voices on digital abilities in science education – towards models of digital versatility in online searching and co-creation with AI.Fri, 09 Jan 2026 09:00:00 +0100
Student voices on digital abilities in science education – towards models of digital versatility in online searching and co-creation with AI.

Supervisor: Johanna Lönngren.
KBE 301 - Lilla hörsalen.Defence of doctoral thesis/en/events/anna-loden-subject-matter-education_12147580/2026-01-09T09:00:00+01:002026-01-09T12:00:00+01:00/en/events/sara-rydman-cell-and-molecular-biology-of-plants_12153037/Sara Rydman, Cell and Molecular Biology of PlantsA systems genetics approach to identify candidate genes driving salicinoid diversity in Populus tremula.Fri, 09 Jan 2026 13:00:00 +0100
A systems genetics approach to identify candidate genes driving salicinoid diversity in Populus tremula.

Supervisor: Nathaniel Street.
KBE3.01 Lilla hörsalen, KBC-huset.Defence of doctoral thesis/en/events/sara-rydman-cell-and-molecular-biology-of-plants_12153037/2026-01-09T13:00:00+01:002026-01-09T17:00:00+01:00/en/events/wcmm-10-year-anniversary_12151660/WCMM 10 year anniversaryWallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine in ±«³¾±ðÃ¥ celebrates its 10-year anniversary!Mon, 12 Jan 2026 13:00:00 +0100
The Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) at Umeå University was established in 2015 as part of a national effort by Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW) to strengthen life science-research in Sweden.

The celebration is open for employees, students, and the general public. The problem with instructions is rarely a lack of information — more often, it is the opposite. When overloaded, students struggle to identify what is important.

By analysing your own course communication using established frameworks, you will gain insights into how to reduce cognitive overload and structure instructions in a way that helps students focus and plan. The goal is for you to leave the workshop with concrete strategies to improve your course instructions — thereby increasing clarity in both communication and learning.

Read more and register here
Läraren, UPLCourse/en/events/kom-workshop-information-or-exformation_12108750/2026-06-03T08:30:00+02:002026-06-03T12:00:00+02:00/en/events/eurau-26-symposium-latitudes_12139443/EURAU 26 Symposium: Latitudes±«³¾±ðÃ¥ School of Architecture welcomes educators, researchers and practitioner to the EURAU 26 Symposium on the theme LATITUDES.
