Från forskning till praktik: att utveckla lärares transformativa handlingskraft i övergången från lärarcentrerad till elevcentrerad undervisning

Research project How do teachers develop their ability to transform their teaching in schools designed to support student-centered learning?

Project description

The project examines how school leaders and teachers collaboratively develop teaching in student-centred learning environments (ILEs). By bringing empirical research into practice, it studies how new forms of teaching can emerge through collective learning. The aim is to contribute to knowledge about head teachers and teachers collective learning process in the shift from teacher-centred teaching to student-centred learning.

Background

Many schools are currently being reshaped both physically and pedagogically to promote student-centred learning, which involves a shift away from traditional, teacher-led instruction. Innovative Learning Environments (ILEs), characterised by open spaces, flexible furniture, and co-teaching, present a new context where teaching must be adapted to students’ needs and engagement..

Purpose

The aim of the project is to contribute knowledge about the collective learning of teachers and school leaders in the transition from teacher-centred to student-centred teaching.

Implementation

The project is based on Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) and includes annual workshops where teachers work with fresh research data, plan student-centred lessons, and reflect on practical changes. The process is documented through audio recordings, written notes, and analysis of photographs.

Significance

The project contributes new knowledge about how practical school development unfolds at the intersection of research and daily teaching practice. It also offers insights for teacher education on how to prepare future teachers to work in student-centred school environments.
