Possibilities and challenges of employing alternative economic models in local planning
Research project
This project aims to explore how alternative economic models can be employed in a local planning context to accelerate sustainable urban transformation. The starting point is the sustainability challenges facing today's society, especially climate change. Despite the well-established link between economic growth and environmental impact, alongside the unfulfilled promises of green growth, growth remains a high priority for politicians and businesses.
The project investigates the relationship between alternative economic models (primarily degrowth) and urban spatial and transport planning based on three overarching objectives: to systematise and conceptualise the relationship between degrowth and urban spatial and transport planning; to examine if and how Swedish municipalities incorporate alternative economic models into urban spatial and transport planning; and to develop scenarios for different futures in which degrowth has influenced urban planning.
