Professor in clinical pharmacy
Medication use among older people has increased over time, reflecting medical advances and the ability to treat more diseases. At the same time, the increased use of medications entails risks, as older individuals are more sensitive to drugs than younger ones. This can lead to unfavorable combinations, adverse effects, and medication-related morbidity. My research aims to reduce these risks and promote more appropriate and safe medication use, with the patient’s needs at the center.
I investigate, among other things, how clinical pharmacists, in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, can help reduce the risk of medication-related readmissions and improve quality of life among older people. A particular driving force for me is to improve medication use for the most vulnerable patients, such as those with dementia, who often have difficulty advocating for themselves.
Ongoing projects in our research group include:
-A randomized controlled trial investigating the effect of clinical pharmacists in transitional care on medication-related hospital readmissions among older people.
-A randomized controlled trial examining the effect of a clinical pharmacist-led program on medication adherence and clinical outcomes in patients with stroke undergoing transitions of care.
-Improving medication therapy and patient involvement through a digital, interdisciplinary model among older people in primary care living in rural areas in northern Sweden.
-Potential over- and underexposure to medications of special relevance among people with dementia: studies based on Swedish national registries.
I am a professor with a combined appointment and have long worked to improve the quality and safety of medication use among older people. My interest in clinical pharmacy emerged early, and after earning a Master of Science in Pharmacy at Uppsala University in 1995 and a Master’s degree in Clinical Pharmacy in 2010, I completed my PhD in Geriatrics at Umeå University in 2016. Since then, I have combined research and teaching with clinical work as a pharmacist. I became a recognized teacher in 2017 and associate professor in 2018, and have established a research group focusing on clinical pharmacy.
I teach courses on the pharmacy programs. Currently I am the course coordinator for Clinical Pharmacy Course 7.5 ECTS. I also supervise degree projects on both bachelor and advanced level. In 2017 I was appointed as a distinguished teacher at Umeå University.
