Maria Bras-Amorós: "Algorithms for exploring the tree of numerical semigroups"

Speaker: Maria Bras-Amorós

Title: Algorithms for exploring the tree of numerical semigroups

Abstract: A numerical semigroup is a subset of N containing zero, with finite complement, and such it is closed under addition. Numerical semigroups have many applications in coding theory but also in other areas such as in music theory. We will introduce the main results on the topic and the construction of different trees for their classification by different parameters. Some open conjectures will be presented relating the parameters of a numerical semigroup as well as concerning their growth with respect to the number of gaps, i.e., the genus. We will expose the state of the art of the algorithms for counting semigroups of each given genus.

Maria Bras-Amorós is a Professor from the Department of Mathematics at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). She earned her PhD from San Diego State University and UPC. Her scientific work focuses on the reliable transmission of information and algebraic structures.
