My research group works with graphene related materials and MXenes both as fundamental research, for energy storage applications and new sorbents. We are partners in EURATOM project MaLaR.
Current research interests:
Some of the past research fields (which might become current again).
Over the years my research interests shifted from fullerenes to carbon nanotubes, high temperature hydrogenation of carbon materials and more recently to graphene-related materials: graphene oxides, graphite oxides, multilayered graphene oxide membranes, composite 2D materials. My current research is mostly related to applications of 2D materials (graphene, graphene oxides, MXenes) in supercapacitors and as sorbents for removal of pollutants.
I am interested also in fundamental studies of graphene oxide structure and chemical modifications. Please check review papers which highlight our experience with graphene/graphite oxides:
We are active users of synchrotron radiation methods in studies of materials properties with experience of work at MAXIV, ESRF, Elettra, PETRA III, SOLEIL, SOLEIL, APS. We also use Neutron Scattering at SUPERADAM beamline (ILL) for studies of graphene oxide films.
We are collaborating with many groups around Europe. Among past highlights I participated as PI in EU Graphene Flagship project (2012-2023). First we studied hydrogen storage in graphene-related materials and later switched to 2D materials for applications in supercapacitors.
Currently I am one of the partners in EURATOM project aimed on recovery and separation of Lanthanide and Actinide elements from industrial waste.
Earlier experience.
I completed my PhD at Uppsala University in 2001 with Prof. Ulf Jansson as supervisor. My early studies were mostly related to fullerenes C60 and C70: polymerization of C60 under high pressure high temperature conditions, solid solvates of C60 and C70, phase transitions between solvate phases. After PhD I worked as research project leader at IMRA Europe in Toyota sponsored hydrogen storage project (2001-2004). Since 2004 I work at Umeå University, first as postdoc, later as Assistant Professor and as a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor). Full Professor starting from September 2023.
